Sealant

A sealant is a flowable resin material that is usually applied to the biting surfaces of the back teeth; the premolars and molars. This flowable material bonds into the deep grooves of the chewing surfaces acting as a barrier and protecting the enamel from 'decay producing bacteria'.

Regular brushing and flossing helps remove food particles and plaque from smooth surfaces of teeth. But the bristles of the toothbrush cannot reach into the deep and very narrow grooves of premolars and molars to remove the food and plaque. Sealants protect these vulnerable areas by "sealing out" plaque, food and decay causing bacteria. Plaque, food and decay causing bacteria do not differentiate between a child's teeth or an adult's teeth. This preventive procedure is recommended for all ages and is very cost effective in the prevention of decay.
